Staff Selection Commission Conducts SSC CHSL Exam every year to recruit Postal Assistants/Sorting Assistants (PA/SA), Data Entry Operator(DEO), Lower Divisional Clerk(LDC) and Court Clerk in various ministry and their subordinate offices.
In this article, we will discuss all the information regarding Selection Process of SSC CHSL (10+2) Exam starting from application form to final selection round.
SSC CHSL Selection Process 2017
All the candidates who are meeting SSC CHSL Eligibility Criteria can apply for CHSL Application Form. Here we will discuss process after application submission. Like how many TIER are there in CHSL Exam, what is skill test, how many marks needed for qualification and how many tiers you need to pass for final selection etc.

Overview of Selection Procedure Steps in CHSL 2016
You need to undergo below TIER(Rounds) to get the final selection. Also please note that you need to qualifiy each tier to reach the final document verification process.
Below is the flow chart of selection process,
- SSC CHSL Recruitment and application submission – For all posts.
- TIER 1 Written Exam – For all posts.
- Descriptive Paper (TIER 2) – For all posts.
- TIER 3: Skill Test – Only for Data Entry Operator posts and Typing Test for PA/SA, LDC, and Court Clerk.
- Document Verification

SSC CHSL Selection Procedure: TIER 1 Written Exam
All the eligible candidates who has successfully filled the application form need to appear for TIER 1 written exam. On below link you can check full syllabus and exam pattern. This is mass elimination round where majority of aspirants gets out. All who clear tier 1 written exam will move to next round which is descriptive paper.
Pattern of TIER 1 Written exam is as below,
- The questions will be objective type and total duration of exam is 75 minutes.
- The exam will be online computer based which will will contain 200 objective type questions.
- Paper will be divided into 4 subjects (section)
- There will be Negative Marking and for every wrong answer 0.25 marks will be deducted.
- The questions will be in both English and Hindi language, candidate can choose as per their preference.
- Candidates suffering from Cerebral Palsy will be given 100 minutes

Getting Passing marks in Tier 1 paper ? — SSC CHSL TIER 1 Result
SSC CHSL Selection Process: TIER 2 Descriptive Paper
Candidates who score good marks in TIER 1 and score above marks than SSC CHSL Cut Off will undergo descriptive paper.
Mode of Descriptive Paper is Pen and Paper Mode and total Marks will be 100 Marks. Candidates will get total time of 1 Hrs in which you need to score 33 % Qualifying Marks. Again Language of Paper will be Either in Hindi or in English. It means, candidates can choose only one language of their choice.
- Essay Writing – 200-250 words
- Letter / Application writing – 150-200 words
SSC CHSL Descriptive Paper (<– read here in Detail)
SSC CHSL Selection Process: Typing Test/Skill Test (TIER 3)
If you qualify the descriptive paper then you need to appear for typing test or skill test based on the posts you applied while filling the application form.
If you applied for Data Entry Operator (DEO) post then you need to appear for Skill Test else if you applied for PA/SA, Lower Division Clerk and Court Clerk then you need to appear for Typing test. Lets discuss them one by one.
All the candidates opted for Data Entry Operator need to appear for skill test.
Duration Of Test: 15 minutes
Speed of data entry: 8000 Key Depressions per hour on Computer
Speed of Data entry will get adjust as per the correct entry of words. You will get a passage which you need to type as per above speed.
All the candidates who are qualifying skill test will be called for Document verification.
All the candidates opted for Lower Division clerk, Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant and court clerk, need to appear for Typing test.
Nature of Exam: Qualifying in nature
Language permitted: English or Hindi (will be taken on computer)
Typing Speed: English (35 words per minute) and Hindi (30 words per minute)
Time : 10 Minutes, it means you need 10500 key depressions per hour in English and 9000 key depressions per hour in Hindi to pass the exam.
Again speed be be adjusted/throttled based on correct typing of words.
Now all the candidates who qualify in TIER 3 (Skill test/typing test) will be called for Document verification. You may check document verification process and list of document required on below link.
Now all the candidates who clear the doc verification and are having prescribed documents will be considered for final merit list or final result.
