The Indian Air Force is the air arm of the Indian armed forces. Its complement of personnel and aircraft assets ranks fourth among the air forces of the world.

If you look at high level procedure of IAF Selection, it is divided into 4 parts. It begins with Online registration or written exam. If you clear the round one shortlisting then you will called for SSB Process. All the SSB Recommended candidates called for medical exam and finally merit list is declared having name of selected candidates.

So it means you need to pass 4 steps as below,

  1. Written Exam (or direct entry into SSB Based on various parameter given below
  2. SSB (Services Selection Board) Round
  3. Medical Exam
  4. All India Merit List

Now lets discuss above rounds one by one.

Step 1: Written Test

Indian Air Force releases recruitment notification on its official website and employement newspaper for all the eligible candidates. You need to apply and register before the last date to apply.

There are three types on entries for which recruitment is released.

For NDA and CDSE

The advertisement for NDA Exam is released twice a year in the months of June and December and for CDS Exam in the months of July and November by UPSC (Union Public Selection Commission). Candidates are to apply as per the advertisement. The written test is conducted by UPSC only for both NDA and CDS.


Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) is for all entries other than NDA and CDSE and for all branches.

AFCAT test is conducted twice a year in February and August Advertisements inviting applications for AFCAT are out in June and December. Candidates are to apply as per the advertisement. The test is conducted all across India by the Indian Air Force.

NCC entry Scheme

Air Squadron NCC Senior division ‘C’ certificate holders are to apply through DG NCC/ respective NCC Air Squadron.

Now all those candidates who clear step 1 need to undergo step 2.

Step 2: SSB (Services Selection Board)

This step is very well known and challenging step in Indian Air Force Selection Process 2017. If you have successfully cleared Step 1, you will receive a Call letter to report to any one of the Air Force Selection Boards located at Dehradun, Varanasi, Gandhinagar, Mysore and Kancharapara.

Here at AFSB, you will undergo following tests in order to ascertain your suitability and gauge your potential as an Officer in the Indian Air Force.

Stage I Test

Stage 1 of SSB is a screening test. Those who qualify Stage 1 are eligible to undergo Stage II testing. Stage I disqualified candidates are routed back to railway station (home) after announcement of results.

  • Officer Intelligence rating Test (OIR)
  • Picture perception and Discussion Test (PPDT)

Stage 2 Test

All Stage I qualified candidates undergo following tests as part of Stage II testing during next three to four days.

  • Psychological Tests: Psychological Tests are written tests that are conducted by a Psychologist.
  • Group Tests: Group Tests are interactive indoor and outdoor activities which are a combination of mental and physical work.
  • Interview round: Interview involves a personal conversation with an Interviewing Officer.

All these tests will be explained to you in detail before they are conducted at the Selection Board.

Pilot Aptitude Battery Test (PABT) is a unique test. It is aimed at assessing a candidate’s aptitude to be trained as a pilot.

Indian Air Force Selection Process Step 3: Medical Test

On the final day of SSB (Conference round), all the Assessors i.e. the Psychologist, Ground Testing Officer and the Interviewing Officer, discuss your personality and decide on whether to recommend you or not. All the recommended candidates will be required to fill up certain documents at the Boards and subsequently move to the Medical step.

In Medical Round, you will be sent for the medical examination either at Air Force Central Medical Establishment (AFCME), New Delhi or Institute of Aviation Medicine, Bengaluru.


Now all the candidates who clear medical exam will be compiled based on their performance in Written exam and SSB Round. For merit preparation, you need to be medical fit, it means it will have only medically fit declared candidates in the list. Final list will be declared based on the vacancies available in various branches / sub branches, joining instructions are issued to join one of the Training establishments.
